Food for Development - A catalyst for agricultural and economic growth
Together with Tetra Pak’s Food for Development Office DeLaval is activating themselves in many developing countries initiating and supporting integrated dairy development projects and feeding programs. Feeding programs based on locally produced food often work as a catalyst creating demand and stimulating the development of the agriculture and dairy sector. The programme is based on knowledge sharing and education for working with complete food deliver systems - from cow to consumer. DeLaval has a deep understanding of dairy farming, milk production and milk collection. Together with the knowledge offered by Tetra Pak in milk processing, milk packaging, food safety and distribution they are a perfect match to cover the milk value chain - from cow to consumer.
Tetra Pak’s Food for Development Office (FfDO) was founded in 2000. They work to co-ordinate and support school feeding, agricultural and dairy development programmes in partnership with national governments, development agencies, funding organisations, NGOs (non-government organisations) and customers. FfDO is the vehicle used by Tetra Laval to co-ordinate the extensive knowledge base gathered in school feeding, agricultural development and to make that experience available as part of the Group’s overall Good Corporate Citizenship efforts.
In the new and challenging partnership with the Food for Development Programme DeLaval will contribute with their knowledge of dairy farming and market development to build an alliance that can provide all expertise needed to develop the whole dairy sector in any given country.
The Cow to Consumer model is today the base for public-private partnership solutions in agricultural development and feeding programmes. By combining training and education of dairy farmers, equipment financing based on commercial terms, consumer education activities and addressing all links in the milk value chain a base for sustainable economic development is established.
Today the FfDO has 14 active colleagues headed by Ulla Holm from Tetra Pak and Hosein Amini from DeLaval. The team works with school milk and development programmes around the globe. With experience of School Milk Programmes in more than 45 countries we are today involved in projects in Nigeria, Madagascar, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and South Africa.
